fib Serbia Young Members and MG Precast workshop on prefabrication

On July 26, 2019, the fib Serbia Young Members organized a workshop titled “Prefabricated concrete structures: local experiences and world trends”.

The workshop was organized together with MG Precast, a leading precast producer with over ten years of presence on the Serbian and regional markets. The event was attended by 25 young engineers from various Serbian design and construction companies.

During the workshop, the participants had the opportunity to visit the prefabrication plant of MG Precast, located in Inđija, in the vicinity of Belgrade, as well as the new 20,000 m2 facility expansion, currently under construction. The technical and commercial staff from MG Precast presented to the young engineers the production process, experiences of doing business in the Serbian and regional market, as well as the significant potential for growth in the application of prefabricated concrete structures in different fields of infrastructure, housing and industry.

Young engineers from the Serbian group also presented different topics at the workshop. The participants were introduced to the fib Bulletin 82 Precast segmental bridges and fib Bulletin 83 Precast tunnel segments in fibre-reinforced concrete. Through these presentations, the attendees could hear in great detail about the state-of-art in these fields and different fib recommendations concerning design and construction.

Further, young engineers also presented their own experiences in the design and construction of prefabricated concrete structures in Serbia, such as the 25,000 mCapitol Park Rakovica shopping centre, opened in 2017 and built by the company Gradina, under the supervision of Mihajlo Ristić, a member of the fib Serbia Young Members. Finally, the participants could hear about and discuss emerging trends in prefabrication and concrete structures in general – 3D printing, BIM, UHPFRC, textile-reinforced concrete, graded concrete structures, and the rapid automation and individualization of construction. The workshop passed in an atmosphere of lively discussion, positive energy and enthusiasm, followed by a social event in the evening.

The workshop is a part of the activities of the newly formed fib Serbia Young Members Group. Its first activity took place this year when it organized a guest lecture given by Prof Albert de la Fuente from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia “Fibre-reinforced concrete: from basics to structural applications” on July 12, 2019. The Serbian group is part of the wider network of Young Member Groups initiated by the fib and coordinated by the International Young Members Group.
